In El Segundo we pride ourselves that our government and community value public safety: we train, equip, and fund police that we know, respect, and trust. We’ve faced a grave challenge in the last four years: we were swept into a country-wide crime wave, a dispiriting trend that undervalued local police, and problematic policies at the county and state level.

As the Mayor, I did not hesitate to advocate for immediate actions, and those actions had state leading results. We firmly believe that compassionate, humane policing can exist alongside firmness and fairness. And with those beliefs in hand, we are the safest city in the region, with crime nearly 75% lower than 2023. The challenges of the previous four years are reminders to continuously improve, not replace or reduce policing. In the last four years we have:

Grown and reshaped our police force with renewed emphasis on presence and patrol
Engaged the District Attorney’s Office on our priorities and needs
Revamped our evidence custody policy to improve investigations
Embraced technology to speed response
Implemented our county leading P.A.T.C.H.E.S program to prevent, assist, and care for the unsheltered homeless
Expanded our engagement with our neighbors to ease coordination

Public Safety is our crowning success, and most critical task. We are vastly safer in the last two years, with shoplifting and catalytic converter thefts at negligible levels. Understanding public safety is heard earned with experience, and making it a top priority is a key reason our city remains Mayberry be the Sea.
